About the site
Hello, and thanks for visiting The Afterimage! I started this site as a place to jot down my impressions of media I’ve engaged with, starting with my best games of 2025 list. It has since evolved to a semi-regular journal for game impressions as well as other interests such as music and technology.
In the past I’ve often found myself struggling to recall details about certain media, even pieces of art that I really enjoyed, and this blog is a way for me to engage more deeply with that art and talk about why I love these things so much.
The name The Afterimage comes from the experience of engaging with a piece of art that is so profound and/or meaningful to you that it leaves a lingering impression, like observing a bright light and still being able to see it after closing your eyes. All afterimages fade with time though, and this blog is an effort to capture and preserve some of that brightness.
About the author
I started gaming at the age of 5 on my family’s Nintendo Entertainment System and Atari 2600. All throughout my life I’ve maintained an interest in — and love for — the medium of interactive entertainment, and have marvelled about how rapidly it has evolved and changed over the decades. Currently I primarily game on PC, with occasional excursions to the Switch 2 and Playstation 5.
My favorite game genres are strategy and tactics games, soulslikes, challenging platformers, and narrative-focused games that strike an emotional chord.
At one point I thought I wanted to be a journalist, but college made it painfully apparent that I’m too much of an introvert for that career. This site started as a desire to get back to writing, which is an activity that I love and think is the way I best express myself.
Nowadays, I’m a software engineer living and working in the midwest. I admittedly have way too many hobbies, even if I were to put aside gaming.
The profile picture on the site is a sketch of my Final Fantasy XIV character drawn by my friend, the talented Skippy of Winnow Wings.
